1992 Trek 990


Got this 18-inch luggd steel bike off eBay, and bidded on it in 3 different auctions before winning it for $51 (additional $75 for shipping). The first time, an international user won, but the seller didn't ship internationally. The second time the seller probably didn't sell it because the XT shifters were not working properly because he later disclosed the shifter problem in the final auction description. (I bidded around $75 the first time.) The front shifter barrel adjuster insertion point into the shifter pod is stripped, but there's just enough grip to allow the adjuster to just sit without moving. There are also some small dents on the left rear chainstay that was covered by a piece of adhesive foam, but luckily the bike dents are minor and the bike is ridable. Although I didn't leave any feedback because the seller appeared selective on what pics to display (not fully showing the least attractive parts of the bike), the seller did an excellent job with packaging.

The front wheel was an inexpensive replacement while someone drilled the Matrix Singletrack Pro rear rim for schraeder, which upset me a little that someone could do that to such a nice rim, and the person didn't even do a good job since the hole is larger than a shraeder valve. The bike came with alarmingly heavy steel bar ends, and I couldn't believe how anyone could still have those anchors (alumninum bar ends are fine) on this bike. I'm sure due to the price of the DS2 suspension fork, the 990 had downgraded components to DX from XT of previous years. Although the crankset is Deore (MT60), all the chainrings are alloy with plastic threaded dustcaps. I didn't have an extra XT crankset to replace along with the derailleurs, but this crankset is more than sufficient. The saddle is a CODA 900 with a torn nose.
