Stopped at: Chicken Spring Lake, mile 744.4 Miles today: 7.7
Last night was extremely cold, and I wished I had set up the tent instead of sleeping out in the open. The 5:00 am sun was a welcomed guest as it began to dry the exterior condensation on the sleeping bag. (The sleeping bag was damp, but doesn't have a DWR coating any longer.)
Just on the other side of the of the peak, not more than half a mile later, I sat thinking, "Maybe this is the end." The storm of doubts has now completely captivated me. Was there any point continuing forward? What was there to look forward to? And if I continued and arrived in Independence on July 4th, everything might be closed. I accepted in my heart this was the end of the Pacific Crest Trail for now, but I would still leave the option to return. As Ernest Hemingway suggested in his novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, "Fight the good fight."
