This is a listing of the water caches through the first 700 miles of the PCT from Campo to Kennedy Meadows. Most, if not all, of the southern California portion is desert. Even the mountainous regions with snow fall could be considered part of the desert since rainfall is not plentiful.
The water caches are not always 100% reliable! They may no longer be there next year, or empty, or bottles left behind by car campers (where applicable), or not resupplied during the early and late hiking season. One trail angel said, "A horse can consume 5 gallons easily." The following list only shows caches with at least 2 gallons and not empty at the time I encountered them. Some water caches are actually near water sources, such as the cache next to a horse water container at mile 53. Miles and landmarks are based on the Pacific Crest Trail Data Book (2001 edition) by Benedict Go. Most of the caches are within 1/4 mile of or exactly at the mileage marker. Thank you trail angels!
