Burney and Ice Cream

Old habits were difficult to break: I must have the record for the latest riser on the Pacific Crest Trail. I got up at 8:00 am, but didn't start moving until 9:20 am. At the highway, I walked down to the Mission Academy to hitchhike because vehicles could pull out to the available shoulder.

The first car out of crossing Cassel Road driven by Bill stopped. Bill was heading into Burney to buy a newspaper at the Safeway grocery store, but since I needed to mail a couple of packages at the post office, he dropped me off at the medical center (which he was planning on visiting) adjacent to the post office. I thanked him and walked across the street behind a business building and found a box to return the blanket.

Bill was a retired assistant school superintendant who originally lived in San Fransisco. we discussed the steep streets and the one snaky road most visitors to San Fransisco must navigate through. Both his knees have been replaced- one just 3 months ago, which was why he needed a checkup at the medical center.

I found a box which perfectly fitted the blanket except it didn't have a lid. Walking towards the McDonald's to get a Big Deluxe Breakfast, I found a piece of cardboard almost the size of the missing top and could duck tape it on.

How I relished the thought of eating a nice artery-clogging breakfast as though I've been trapped in a third world country lacking food. At had to arrive before 10:30 am to order the Big Breakfast Deluxe; however, this particular restaurant didn't offer coffee with their breakfast. Luckily, McDonald's was currently having a special on super-size drinks for only 59 cents. The store silently offered the special because there was no signs indicating it. Good thing I heard about it on the radio last night.

I packaged the blanket inside the box and wrote and attached a brief note; however, I refrained from reprimanding Duke for his lack of appreciation. Parcel postage was $3.53, and I hope they do receive their blanket.

With a priority mail flat rate envelope, I was able to mail the black Columbia shorts, one knee brace, and journal home for $3.85. The post office clerk was very cool and helpful.

The post office had a new log book in the lobby which the clerk asked me to sign, which I was more than happy to after the good experience in this cozy town. Just Jane, a section hiker, owned the first entry from June, and entered the second and last entry. Briefly, a gentlemen made some comments to me, and he would turn out to be a helpful person for me on this day in town.
